The installation of the exhibition Zolata Belarusi began, dedicated to the people of the protest years (for the fifth anniversary of the beginning of those decisive events). I installed three of my works. The first: a collage with the hashtag #evalution and an image of Soutine’s Eva, a hyperbolized canvas that rises insistently, like a bone in the throat, in front of the Belarusian parliament Fig 19.
The second: works from the series Martyrdom Fig 2–3, where photographs of beaten protesters are printed on grey paper (the background painted in gold, the clothing highlighted in white). These images unmistakably recall icons, displaying stigmata and a mannered embrace of sacrifice; at the same time they function as a powerful instrument of anti-propaganda, since the entire internet then was flooded with these traces of beatings, and this visual torrent became one of the factors that lifted the protest.
The third: a large cloth behind the glass of a showcase, showing an empty flagpole-bomb. This is one of the key images from the cycle Practices of Subordination Fig 16.

Zhora and I went to the river, discussing a possible institution and the obstacles that might arise in creating it. The next day Zhora helped me finish and pack a work for Riga, and in the evening we ended up, already heavily drunk, at a French party in My pod sceną Fig 7. There Pasha Mohutski “switched me off” with two shots, turning the following day halfway into a fight with a hangover.

The fifth anniversary of the beginning of the protests – we opened Zolata Belarusi. For the Belarusian diaspora this date has become a point of heightened irreversibility. The protest, the largest civic mobilization in the history of independent Belarus, led to an unprecedented wave of repression: according to Viasna, by July 2025 the country still held 1,184 political prisoners, including 175 women. Human Rights Watch confirms: in these years thousands passed through prisons, many were tortured and denied medical care, and some died due to the conditions of detention (eight people!).
Hundreds of thousands left Belarus (estimates range from 200,000 to 500,000) and created a “society in exile” that became not only a political voice but also the cultural body of a new Belarus. People’s embassies, human rights networks, initiatives of various kinds operate as an infrastructure of memory and solidarity, keeping the Belarusian issue alive in the public field, the very issue the regime tries to erase.
The fifth anniversary of the protests is a threshold at which it becomes clear that we live with double time: with Belarus that remains in memory, and with Belarus that we are building in exile. There is also the impenetrable Belarus, still there, frighteningly transformed under the pressure of the Russian world. This country exists at once in memory and in the future, yet it does not exist in the present. Return is not possible for now, and it is precisely this awareness that shapes today’s personal, cultural, and political identity.
After the vernissage everyone first went to a hidden jewel of Poznań: the bar Hause Fig 8/15/18, and then as a large group we wandered toward the Warta. There, under the bridge and the full moon Fig 1/4–6/9–10/12, we talked about the exhibition, spoke with Sasha Adamov, Sasha Vialichka, and other visiting guests.

Alexei, Zhora, and Mikita brought Sasha Adamov to the studio to see the exhibition and then lingered at my place.
