Tamara and Sergey

September 28

In the morning, impatient and alert, I left Warsaw for Poznań. The reason was long awaited: Sergey Kiryushchenko and Tamara Sokolova had arrived in the city, returning from a seaside holiday. They were staying at a hotel by the water run by Krzysztof’s family. We had missed them greatly, especially Tamara, whom I personally had not seen for about seven years. The very fact of their return to our shared space felt like the restoration of a connection long postponed, but never lost.

By evening, Raman and Krzysztof Fig 6 invited us to dinner in honor of the long-awaited guests. I came with Pavel and Lesha Fig 4. We clustered closely in the kitchen (Olga Maslovskaya was with us as well) and waited with anticipation for Sergey and Tamara, who were staying in another apartment of our friends. The waiting was nervous Fig 8 and joyful, almost like the end of December before the holidays, when nothing has begun yet, but the approach of something important is already felt; the return of people without whom the space had long remained incomplete. And then they appeared.

We hugged a lot Fig 2/7/16 and rejoiced in the meeting without restraint, almost childlike. Along with Sergey and Tamara came Marat Murashko, who had been driving them by car from the seaside through different cities. Raman put great care into preparing a multi-course dinner Fig 1/12/20. We talked for a long time: about Minsk and what is happening in Belarus, about art and community in Poznań, about family news, and about things that cannot be reduced to news. Raman showed his works, we sat in his studio Fig 1/14/17, discussed his collection, and found ourselves inspired by the surroundings and by a shared, renewed perspective.

The next day, Sergey, Tamara, and Marat came to our studio Fig 3/21 with Alexey. We gave them a tour of the exhibition Family as a Choice, symbolic in the context of their visit, speaking about the works, the context, and how the project had taken shape. Afterwards we simply sat, drank wine, introduced them to Zhora, while the fading sunset colored the gray walls of the studio with that expected, twilight light Fig 5.

On the third and final day of their stay in Poznań, we met in the afternoon at the National Museum Fig 9/11/19. Raman Tratsiuk guided us through the exhibition, explaining its internal logic and sharing some of the works’ quieter secrets. After that, we stopped by an unsuccessful exhibition at the Arsenal Gallery, then went to counter the disappointment in a café with excessive portions, and later sat at Dragon Fig 13.

In the evening, after seven, we went to the apartment where our friends were staying Fig 15. Tamara was waiting for us there; because of an injured leg, she had not gone with us to the museums and around the city. We continued our conversations, sitting over wine, already aware that this was the end of these days. We said goodbye without a clear sense of timing. In these new times it is almost always like this: you never know exactly for how long you are parting with someone, yet what remains is closeness, gratitude for coinciding in time, and a cautious hope for the next meeting.
