Orgy on
Shchekavytsia
Hill

September 25

As part of the Fringe Festival at WOK, the Warsaw Observatory of Culture Fig 3–4, the performance program opened. In the evening we came to support Olha Maslovska Fig 2, who presented a performance in which the audience first poured water into a basin, and then she, taking off her dress, washed the floor with that water, absorbing the collective presence Fig 23. In the finale she put the wet and dirty dress back on, turning it into an emblem of servitude and humiliation at once. Among the audience were Valentiy, Polina, and Vika Hrebenikova, with whom we later ended up at the bar Berlin Fig 16, drinking prosecco and drifting into languid conversation. Afterwards, I took Olha to the legendary Plan B bar, where we stayed for another hour, on the edge of night’s indifference.

September 26

In the morning I met Tasha Katsuba Fig 7 at our Un-packing exhibition in the gallery of the Dramatic Theatre. After our discussion we went to Zachęta Fig 5–6/9–10/14, where Olha Maslovska Fig 22 joined us. Among other things, the museum was showing an exhibition of the delicate Giorgio Morandi Fig 21. Later we went to the Museum of Modern Art, where I was to meet Nikita Kadan, who at that moment was installing his work Silence in the Classroom as part of the Kyiv Biennial. He took me through the installation site Fig 11, showing books and references, explaining the narrative lines of the piece.

Later Nikita and I met Karol Radziszewski, and the three of us went to the café Między Nami Fig 19–20. Over the past year Karol seemed to have turned into a teenager, gaunt, eyes burning, his speech jumping from parties to sex and drugs. This new obsession is striking, as if Karol had finally become the protagonist of his own archives. The conversation spiraled in the same direction again, but Nikita shifted to the subject of his graphic and monumental work depicting an orgy on Shchekavytsia Hill. He explained that the idea came from an ironic reaction among Ukrainians to the threat of nuclear war: if the end is inevitable, let it happen on a hilltop, in an orgy, as an affirmation of corporeality against fear and destruction.

Karol soon left, and I dragged Nikita to the gay bar Ramona, where we barricaded ourselves in a small upstairs room Fig 1, locking the door against the karaoke below. Later Alina Kleytman Fig 18, Yana, and other friends joined us. We spent a long time talking with Alina about her recent sculptures.

The night stretched on. Nikita and I, drunk and unrestrained, stumbled back to his room at the Novotel, where Yana and her friend later appeared. I got home only at four in the morning.

September 27

The next day I met Nikita again and took him to the premiere of the play Un-packing Fig 26–27. It is too early to judge the performance based on an unpolished premiere: the actors and text are strong, but the visual structure and direction are still raw and unsettled. I rarely go to the theatre because of an acquired claustrophobic side effect, but here I was allowed to stand at the side of the audience rows, and I still could not take my eyes off the stage. After the show we went up to the theatre’s roof Fig 8, where we sincerely congratulated Mikita Ilyinchyk and Kirył Masheka on their success.

That evening Nikita Kadan stayed at our place, having confused the date of his flight to Tokyo and needing somewhere to spend the night. The three of us, with Marina, sat in the kitchen for a while longer and then went to sleep.
