Freak Show

September 19

A scorching and mercilessly bright day. At noon a courier rings the doorbell with a heavy box that has no return address. An hour later Pavel calls and says simply “open it, it is for you.” Inside is the newest iPhone, the seventeenth model released just a few days ago. For the second year in a row he gives me the latest one as if updating not the device but our time together, this year for our seventeenth anniversary. He knows how to love like that, through technology, through upgrades, through precision and circuitry.

In the evening we met with him and Zhora and went to Rozbrat Fig 10–14 where a documentary was playing, pizza smoked in the oven and wine was poured under the counter. We talked about news and politics. Later we continued the night at My pod sceną Fig 15 where we celebrated the staged reading of Say Hi to Abdo by the Belarusian playwright Mikita Ilyinchyk, a judicial dystopia in which the body becomes evidence and language becomes an instrument of violence. Among the crowd was Zmitser Yarmolaeu-Doshchynski, a theater theorist and co curator of the Belarusian section of the Queer Museum in Warsaw, visiting Poznań for the first time.

On the square in front of the Town Hall they presented Freak Show. A century after the so called freak circus with the Lion Man, a new stage rises on the same spot where imperfect bodies once again become spectacle. It was a sequence of performances in the spirit of David Lynch dedicated to the Day of Visibility for People with Disabilities.
The technology rebelled. Microphones fell, cables snapped, every performance broke apart as if the stage itself had decided to become one of the performers, bodily, fragile and vulnerable.

Despite the sabotage and quiet mutiny of the scene itself, the show still happened, fragile and imperfect yet alive. Nadya Markevich Fig 3 could not come because of illness, but they showed her video in which a rose grows from her missing arm. Babcia Fig 6 performed a furious anti cruelty act protesting violence against rabbits. Daniel Kotowski Fig 2, a mute performer, staged a physical piece about the spectator’s power and the gestures of violence. Agata Wąsik as Miss Picasso Fig 5 sang a Lynchian song, her remarkable voice still cutting through the scars of the broken microphone. Filip Pawlak Fig 1/4 held the show together with stubborn grace like a captain who already knows the ship is sinking but keeps conducting the waves.

Sometimes the random drunken crowd crossing the square could not bear it. Some laughed, others shouted. The same cruel words that had been heard here a hundred years ago under the circus tent. Only now a drone hovered above the square, a god of the new age indifferently recording the ugliness below.

September 21

The heat returned, dense and sticky like in July. We still managed to support the performance by Papa Bo moving Fig 16 through the city center as during the Minsk protests, a DJ set with speakers strapped to the body, a dynamic procession of sound and movement.

The final stop was again My pod sceną Fig 7/19 where the book and theater festivals had merged into one continuous current. This time we brought along Mitya Yarmolaeu-Doshchynski, smiling apologetically after the previous night. We showed him the exhibition at our studio Fig 20 and then went to Roman Tratsiuk’s place for azure colored tea, mulberries and plums Fig 8–9. Mitya came back to life before our eyes like an aspirin tablet dissolving into clarity.

We walked him back to the hotel and returned to My pod sceną for Benka’s poetry concert Fig 18. The following text struck me most deeply:

There is much mixed into kindness
But rage is pure
Ask God if you want
What does he extract light from
Only from ultimate fury
Light of unbearable clarity

Only from fury comes light

You lie gnawed and deafened
Split open with a can knife
Among bones and pits and mounds
Everything burns to fuck

Yet you are glad as a child burning his school diary
For a brief moment
You illuminate your endless dark
You shake your own hand

The most vicious in me thank you for it
The most vicious in me
It is beautiful unbearably beautiful
The most vicious in me so whole so precious
The most vicious in me
The most unfeigned
The most the most vicious in me

Freak Show
