0 / KATSUBA

October 7

I arrived in Białystok for the installation of Tasha Katsuba’s exhibition 0 / KATSUBA, which I curate. We were invited by Katarzyna Sewerska, the director of the Sledzinski Gallery Fig 8, whom I have known for a long time, since the period when I lived in Białystok for more than three years and she co-organized the art space R5. Returning to the city felt joyful and, as the following days revealed, foggy and anxious.

We had been moving toward this exhibition for a long time. Even before the installation, I conducted a multi-hour interview with Tasha and wrote extensive texts that will form the basis of the catalogue. We consciously decided to postpone its preparation and presentation until the final weeks before the exhibition closes, so that the documentation of the completed exhibition could also be included. This time, my visit was devoted exclusively to the space itself, the final structure of the exhibition, and its documentation.

From the very beginning, the exhibition was conceived as a manifesto of overcoming and a point of zeroing. We assembled six of Tasha’s key costumes and presented them as an archive of “skin”. Tasha wanted to “destroy” these costumes, as she often does, overcoming the pressure of her previous statements. However, following my suggestion, each piece was compressed between two sheets of plexiglass and transformed into a surface for display.

Tasha had already been in Białystok for about a week and had completed a colossal amount of work. By the time I arrived, the curtains and suspension systems were ready. Together with Sasha Adamov, she literally immersed the costumes in these glass shells. Formally, there was not much work left, but in practice each day was dense and intense.

October 8–9

The gallery began to function simultaneously as a boutique and as a runway. The monitors in the shop windows set the rhythm of the KATSUBA brand, black curtains created an intimate mode, and at the entrance a couch was meant to appear Fig 2, which the artist covered day after day with black hair Fig 12–14 as a sign of prolonged and repetitive work with trauma. In this space, according to our intention, art and fashion were meant to converge into a shared grammar, in which numbers, colors, and textiles formed a system of meanings, and the agency of form returned control over the gaze to the subject.

We structured the exhibition route as a sequence of overcoming and color registers Fig 3–5/7/9–11. Visitors were met by a row of glass plates suspended on metal cables. Kind Riot Policeman (1) operated in a pink register: plushness and softness discharged the symbolic power of patriarchal state violence, shifting it into the realm of irony and vulnerability. Hope (2) established a white, wedding-ritual order, in which dense embroidery and inlays articulated the experience of female solidarity as dignity and a form of communal strength. Warrior of Love (3) appeared as a red figure of presence, where arrows and a crossbow functioned as a tactile metaphor of care and resilience within a militarized optic. Candidate for Faith (4) was a gray uniform with protective elements and a suitcase; the trace of a wound and the “one” extracted from the chest transformed solitude into a diary of self-assembly. Death (5) took shape as a black cartography of knots and loops and a “diary of tears” in Polaroids; the costume, with loops sewn on the outside and a Polaroid lining inside, materialized a therapeutic cycle. The route was concluded by Attempt to Get Rid of Shame (0), a bodily mosaic under glass with a textile transcript of a conversation with a psychotherapist, a work that set the tuning fork for the entire exhibition: articulation displaced shame, and testimony formed a language.

During these days, I constantly supported Tasha. Before the opening, she was on intense emotional swings, very nervous, doubtful, and exhausted. Here, curating truly meant care. In parallel, I prepared the booklet for print and wrote a meditation. We recorded audio with Tasha’s voice in Polish and Belarusian.

This “zeroing meditation” was based on an actual psychotherapeutic practice proposed by her psychotherapist, but I reworked it as a mini-tour of the exhibition, embedding the entire route into it. It concluded the exhibition in a separate room with a long videoc Fig 6, functioning as a final point and a practice of zeroing.

October 10

Throughout these days, I experienced Białystok in a state of melancholy. My friends here were unable to meet with me, although I did accidentally run into Pavel Matyshevsky and Adam Fig 18. Therefore, after long days of concentration, the opening felt like an exhale and the joy of being able to embrace friends and acquaintances, especially Monika, whom I was particularly happy to see. Tasha found the strength to come in the final minutes of the opening. As is customary in Białystok, everyone then went out to the bars.

October 11

The day after the opening, I stayed to produce the documentation. We photographed ourselves with Tasha for the catalogue Fig 1: I am sitting with a notebook, like a psychotherapist, next to Tasha lying on the hairy couch, an exact and almost literal image of our exhibition.

0 / KATSUBA
