Dis/Synchrony
Kirill Masheka came to stay with us for a week and to catch his breath Fig 31. But because of fatigue and stress he picked up an infection, which later turned out to be coronavirus. The first days he self-isolated in our living room, but then we moved him to quarantine in the studio. In the end it was exactly what he needed – to lie low and gather himself in a kind of progressive solitude. So we didn’t really meet during this visit.
October 31
On Halloween Krzysztof and Roman organized a masquerade at their place Fig 6–21/23–28. A large group really put effort into their costumes, but Denis still stood out the most with a mask of some Kazakh evil god Fig 5. As usual in that house everything goes over the edge: loud music, dancing ending in falling on the floor Fig 14–15, an alcohol fountain. I was waiting for Tasha Katsuba to arrive, she was supposed to bring me her black mask (a symbol of the lunar eclipse – Lilith) Fig 13/17. She arrived as a vampire just before midnight, at the moment when Halloween was turning into Alexey’s birthday celebration (Tasha specially brought him a jacket made of hair as a gift Fig 18).
Alexey’s financial situation in Poznań is not the best under migration conditions, and we all worry about him. A few months ago I had a thought: to improve his finances, why not try tattooing. Alexey has everything for it: he is methodical and precise, he draws in a recognizable way, and many people would want to have his drawings on their bodies. He is not afraid of skin punctures and needles, and most importantly – he is an excellent communicator, which is crucial for a tattoo artist. This idea gradually settled in him, and he decided to try. Without telling him I organized a fundraiser in our community, we all contributed and bought him a machine and everything needed to start. Our mutual friend, tattoo artist Nadya, agreed to teach him. At midnight we gave him the present. He was touched and, as expected, a bit confused Fig 19.
November 2–3
Alexey came over to discuss the night, his birthday and how he would continue learning tattooing. At the same time he prepared stencils for his graphic works. The next day we discussed with Zhora ideas for his new works at the Academy, stopping by the newly opened café Łyk on Garbary Fig 3/29. The space is striking, but (even if it is their concept) the kitchen is very slow.
November 4–5
At our film club Zhora for the first time showed a film, choosing a classic — Casablanca Fig 4. He explained the choice by saying that the bar space reminds him of My pod sceną: a migrant environment, waiting for documents, tension and solidarity. And if you look closely, you can also read a queer line in the film.
These same days there was a supermoon Fig 1. The so-called Beaver Moon seemed closer than usual, and this feeling had been there since Halloween. We talked about it, noticed it, and at some point even adjusted our movements to it, going in the evening to Psychedelia bar.
November 6
Under the influence of the bright moon I decided to realize a long-standing idea – to buy two clocks and recreate at home Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s work Perfect Lovers: two clock faces moving in unison Fig 2. I deliberately bought cheap clocks so the experiment would be more visible, since according to the artist’s idea synchronization is achieved through constant alignment of the two mechanisms. Setting them turned out to be more difficult than it seemed. In the end I hung them next to each other at the entrance to the corridor. And already the next day it became noticeable that the ticking was beginning to diverge.
Looking ahead, I will note a difference of a full second after a month. This small shift turned out to be more precise than any formulation: perfect synchrony does not sustain itself. It requires constant attention and personal investment/desire, and sometimes is impossible at all.
November 7
I bought some furniture for the home, assembled it. I met with Igor from the London-based publishing house Skaryna Press, for which I have been designing books for several months. Igor was in Poznań, and we met to discuss next steps: he showed new materials, and we outlined future editions. After the meeting Zhora and I walked through the city, he showed me a courtyard I had never seen before Fig 22/30, and we stopped by Danila’s workplace to synchronize plans.

Суперлуние и не/синхронность
29 октября
К нам приехал Кирилл Машека погостить на недельку и перевести дух. Но из-за усталости и стресса он подцепил инфекцию, позже оказалось, что это коронавирус. Первые дни он самоизолировался у нас в зале, но потом мы перевели его на карантин в студию. В итоге это именно то, что ему было необходимо – отлежаться и собраться в прогрессивном одиночестве. Так с ним и не сошлись в этот визит.
31 октября
На Хэллоуин Кшиштоф и Роман организовали маскарад у себя. Внушительная компания расстаралась в нарядах, но всё равно Денис больше всех выделился маской какого-то казахского злого бога. Как обычно в этом доме всё через край: громкая музыка, танцы с падением на пол, алкогольный фонтан. Я ждал приезда Таши Кацубы, которая должна была привезти мне свою чёрную маску (символ затмения луны — Лилит). Она в образе вампирши успела приехать перед полночью, к моменту, когда Хэллоуин перетекал в празднование дня рождения Алексея (Таша специально привезла ему в подарок волосатый пиджак).
У Алексея не самое лучшее финансовое положение в Познани в условиях миграции, и мы все переживаем за него. Несколько месяцев назад мне пришла мысль: чтобы поправить его доходы, не заняться ли ему татуировкой? Ведь у Алексея полный набор качеств для этого: он методичный и аккуратный, узнаваемо рисует, и многим бы хотелось выбить его рисунки на себе. Его не пугают проколы кожи и иглы, а главное — он потрясающий коммуникатор, что так важно для тату-мастера. Эта идея постепенно у него прижилась, и он решил попробовать. Втайне от него я организовал сбор средств в нашем сообществе, мы скинулись и купили ему машинку и всё необходимое для старта. Наша мировая подруга, татуировщица Надя, согласилась обучать его. В полночь мы вручили ему подарок. Он растрогался и, ожидаемо, растерялся.
2–3 ноября
Алексей зашёл ко мне обсудить прошедшую ночь, день рождения и то, как он будет учиться татуировке дальше. Он параллельно подготовил лекала для своей графики. На следующий день обсуждали с Жорой идеи для его новых работ в Академии, зайдя в недавно открывшееся кафе Łyk на Гарбарах. Пространство эффектное, но (хоть это их концепт) с очень медленной кухней.
4–5 ноября
В нашем киноклубе Жора впервые показывал фильм, выбрав классику — Касабланку. Он объяснил выбор тем, что пространство бара напоминает ему Мы под сценой: мигрантская среда, ожидание документов, напряжение и солидарность. И если смотреть внимательно, в фильме можно прочитать и квир-линию.
В эти же дни было суперлуние. Так называемая «бобровая луна» казалась ближе обычного, и это ощущение тянулось ещё с Хэллоуина. Мы это обсуждали, замечали и в какой-то момент даже подстроили под это свои перемещения, пошли вечером в Psychedelia bar.
6 ноября
Пожалуй, под влиянием яркой луны, я решил реализовать давно задуманное — купить двое часов и воспроизвести дома работу Феликса Гонзалеса-Торреса Идеальные любовники: два циферблата, идущие в унисон. Я специально купил дешёвые часы, чтобы эксперимент был заметнее, ведь по задумке художника синхронизация достигается постоянной сверкой двух механизмов. Настройка их оказалась сложнее, чем казалось. В итоге повесил их рядом при входе в коридор. И уже на следующий день стало заметно, что тиканье начинает расходиться.
Забегая вперёд, зафиксирую расхождение за месяц на целую секунду. Этот небольшой сдвиг оказался точнее любой формулировки: идеальная синхронность не удерживается сама. Она требует постоянного внимания и личного вклада/желания, а порой невозможна вовсе.
7 ноября
Купил домой немного мебели, собрал её. Встретился с Игорем из лондонского издательства Skaryna Press, для которого я оформляю книги уже несколько месяцев. Игорь был в Познани, и мы встретились обсудить дальнейшие шаги: он продемонстрировал новые материалы, мы наметили будущие издания. После встречи с Жорой прошлись по городу, он показал мне двор, в котором я раньше не был, и зашли к Даниле на работу для синхронизации планов.
