Declaration of
Independence

October 1

No sooner had Sergey and Tamara left Poznań than, the very next day, we were saying goodbye to another pair of “chosen parents”: Joanna and Stefan Ficner. Their abrupt move to Warsaw left no room for a calm, private farewell, and perhaps that was precisely why the Poznań community could not simply let it pass. A farewell gathering was organized at the home Fig 18–20/22 of one of their friends: a dinner that brought together friends, dense presence, an attempt to hold on to the moment. We came together with Pavel, Alexey, and Olga. The unspoken star of the evening was the artist and conceptualist Piotr Kowalski Fig 7–8.

October 2–3

These days passed in a mode of putting things in order before a long departure. We met with Aleksandra and Zhora in the studio Fig 21 and discussed a possible presentation of our initiative about Poznań, still only in the form of an outline, a direction, not yet a fully shaped project, but already with a clear inner vector.

October 4

Pavel saw me off to the train to Kraków. In Kraków I was met by Natalia Legutko, who took me straight to Galeria ASP. That same day, without postponing the work, I assembled my installation for the exhibition Declaration of Independence (October 6 – November 23, 2025). Curator Kamil Kuitkowski Fig 2 brought together works by Monika Drożyńska, Daniel Kotowski, the Komitet Pięciu group, Martix Navrot, Niko Płaczek, Marta Romankiv, Ala Savashevich, Maria Stangret, Agnieszka Szczotka, and myself.

I presented a work from the series Plate Tectonics (Social Marble): Gravestones Fig 1–3. The installation explores the intersection of materiality, ideology, and representation through fragments of marble and granite overlaid with faux “social marble” film, a simulacral surface borrowed from Minsk’s urban practice of covering graffiti with adhesive marble texture. By juxtaposing authentic gravestones with their synthetic counterparts, the work constructs a topography of ideological ruins in which imitation displaces substance and ornament masks decay. The installation operates simultaneously as archaeology and ontology, exposing the mechanisms of post-socialist reconstruction, in which décor becomes an instrument of power and the aesthetics of the cemetery turn into a language of governance. In this interplay of presence and surface, a contemporary condition emerges in which memory, history, and material truth are continuously reenacted as simulacra.

By evening, after dinner, I went out to walk around Kraków and briefly stopped by the club Ciemnia Fig 6/9–11. In the glow of mobile phones, lovers of chemistry sniffed crystals off benches upholstered in faux leather, forming in the circular openings of glory holes scenes worthy of Latour Fig 12.

October 5

The next morning I walked through the city Fig 4–5 more attentively: past a demonstration in support of Palestinians, to the sculpture by Igor Mitoraj (the very one after which I made my intervention in 2010), and then to Bunkier Sztuki Fig 13–15, where there were truly dense exhibitions on view, one of them devoted to the history of the institution itself.

By evening I returned to the installation, made photographic documentation, and spoke with the curator. During the process, an old inverted television suddenly began to smoke and had to be urgently taken outside Fig 17 to avoid triggering the fire alarm.

October 6

On the morning of the exhibition opening, I stopped by the gallery once more, spoke with the organizers, and then continued on to Białystok for the installation of the next exhibition.

Declaration of Independence
