Desynchronisation
Another meeting took place at Gray Mandorla in preparation for establishing the foundation. Lena, Yulia, Marina Fig 20 and I worked on distributing roles. As soon as they left, I headed to the Dostlevs' studio Fig 8 to talk with Andrei about the upcoming Frottage. The exhibition was meant to explore the attraction between our two studios and the magnetism that had emerged within the Poznań community. We drew up a list of participating artists.
Any field exists only because it is capable of both attraction and repulsion at the same time. A community differs from a magnet only in that its poles are constantly changing places.
On my way home I found a stepladder abandoned in the bushes Fig 10. One can never have too many ladders at home. Especially when one lives simultaneously downstairs, upstairs, in a studio, and in the process of institutional construction.
April 1–5
Received the one-year residence document Fig 19. The Belarusian passport is no longer valid. The return has been arranged. Cashier, don't scan the lamb!
Built a website to manage the foundation, adapted to Marina's dyslexia.
We corresponded, invited artists, developed the exhibition concept and prepared for Easter Fig 15. For Wielkanoc we went to visit Sławek to support him after Aleksandra's passing. We laid the table and cooked salmon.
We lit a candle in Aleksandra's memory Fig 14. Whenever we began talking about her, the flame unexpectedly flared to an almost impossible height. In moments like these, rationality suffers fragments of defeat. You know it's just a draft and cheap Chinese wax, yet you still find yourself looking at memory and anxiety Fig 11–12.
Sławek shared Aleksandra's handwritten cheesecake recipe with us Fig 13. The only recipe he knows how to make.
April 6
Żora, our friends and I went on a long drift around the city Fig 5/7. At Action I bought two identical wall clocks in order to recreate Felix Gonzalez-Torres's Perfect Lovers in our hallway.
Getting them to run in unison turned out to be surprisingly tedious. The hands aligned, drifted apart, then aligned again. By the very next day one clock had already begun to lag behind the other almost imperceptibly. Within a month the desynchronisation had grown to several seconds.
This, in fact, is where the precision of Gonzalez-Torres's work lies. The sculpture begins precisely at the moment the clocks start to drift apart. Here, coincidence requires constant adjustment Fig 16.
I felt sympathy for museum conservators. Then again, perhaps museums commission more precise Swiss mechanisms rather than Chinese ones like mine from Action. Although, in this case, the inexpensive mechanism is probably the more honest one.
April 8
I ordered a neon sign for my new work for the exhibition Fig 6. Afterwards I stopped to photograph the heavily graffitied toilets in one of Poznań's shopping centres, a well-known cruising spot. An anonymous mural of desire and anarchy under the faint supervision of the cleaning staff Fig 1–4.
April 9–10
Żora and I went to buy a kitchen countertop. I had measured everything in advance and given the dimensions to the salesperson. What we received was a suspiciously small offcut.
It turned out that, for some reason, the ruler I had used was marked in inches, while I had mistaken them for centimetres. An expensive piece of stupidity. We kept laughing about it while I joined the countertop pieces together and threw away the Chinese ruler.
Throughout these days I met with Andrei almost every evening to discuss the exhibition. On 10 April we attended the openings at Rodriguez Fig 9/17–18 and Arsenal. Lately, the exhibitions at Arsenal and elsewhere have hardly reached me at all. Desynchronisation here as well.
The past few weeks unfolded under the signs of attraction, frottage and continual adjustment. The candle refused to behave rationally, the clocks synchronously, and the ruler metrically. Three inexpensive Chinese objects unexpectedly tied these days together. The cheapest things turned philosophical, revealing more precisely than many theories just how contingent memory, love and every system of measurement really are.

Притяжение и рассинхрон
31 марта
В Gray Mandorla состоялась очередная встреча перед созданием фонда. Работали с Леной, Юлей и Мариной: распределяли роли. Сразу после их отъезда отправился в студию к Достлевым, чтобы поговорить с Андреем о предстоящем фроттаже. Выставка должна была рассказать о притяжении между нашими двумя мастерскими и о магнетизме, возникшем в познанском сообществе. Составили список авторо:к.
Любое поле существует только потому, что одновременно умеет притягивать и отталкивать. Сообщество отличается от магнита лишь тем, что его полюса постоянно меняются местами.
По дороге домой нашёл в кустах стремянку. Лестниц в доме мало не бывает. Особенно если живёшь одновременно внизу, наверху, в студии и в стадии институционального строительства.
1–5 апреля
Получил годовой документ, паспорт ведь беларусский – всё. Возврат заказан. Касса, баранину не пробивать!
Сделал сайт для управления фондом, под дислексию Марины.
Переписывались, приглашали художниц и художников, прописывали концепцию выставки, готовились к Пасхе. На Великаноц отправились к Славку, чтобы поддержать его после ухода супруги. Накрыли стол, приготовили лосося.
Зажгли свечу в память об Александре. Когда начинали говорить о ней, пламя неожиданно разрасталось почти до невозможной высоты. Рациональность в такие моменты частично терпит поражения. Осознаешь, что дело в сквозняке и дешёвом китайском воске, но всё равно смотришь на память и тревогу.
Славек поделился рецептом сырника, записанным Александрой от руки. Единственный рецепт, что он научился готовить.
6 апреля
Устроили с Герой и друзьями большой дрифт по городу. В Action купил двое одинаковых настенных часов, чтобы повторить в прихожей Perfect Lovers Феликса Гонзалеса-Торреса. Настроить их в унисон оказалось утомительно. Стрелки сходились, расходились, снова сходились. Уже на следующий день одни часы начали едва заметно отставать. Через месяц рассинхрон вырос до нескольких секунд.
В этом, собственно, и заключается точность работы Гонзалеса-Торреса. Скульптура начинается именно в момент, когда они начинают расходиться. Здесь совпадение требует непрерывной настройки.
Посочувствовал музейным хранителям. Но возможно, для коллекций они заказывают более точные швейцарские механизмы, а не такие же китайские, как мои из Action. Хотя дешёвый механизм здесь, определенно, честнее.
8 апреля
Заказал неоновую надпись для своей новой работы к выставке. Потом зашёл сфотографировать щедро расписанные туалеты в одном из познанских торговых центров, где происходит круизинг. Анонимная фреска желания и анархии под слабым надзором клининговой службы.
9–10 апреля
С Жорой отправились за кухонной столешницей. Я заранее снял размеры и передал их продавцу. Получили подозрительно маленький отрезанный кусок. Выяснилось, что линейка, которой я пользовался, по какой-то причине была размечена в дюймах, а я принимал их за сантиметры. Дорогостоящая глупость. Мы ещё долго смеялись, пока я соединял куски столешницы и выбрасывал китайскую линейку.
Все эти дни по вечерам регулярно встречался с Андреем, обсуждали выставку. 10 апреля вместе сходили на открытия в Rodriguez и Арсенал. В последнее время выставки в Арсенале и других галереях почти совсем в меня не попадают. Рассинхрон и тут.
Последние недели прошли под знаком притяжения, фроттажа и настройки. Свеча отказалась вести себя рационально, часы – синхронно, линейка – метрически. Три дешёвые китайские вещи неожиданно связали эти дни. Самые дешёвые китайские вещи расфилософствовались и точнее многих теорий показали, насколько условны память, любовь и любые системы измерения.
