The Conservation
of Performance

March 18

At the Academy of Art, a lecture by Joanna Lesnerowska Fig 7–12, organised by Stefan Fitzner. A discussion about what happens to a performance after it has ended.

Beyond ordinary documentation (that would be too banal). Archive. Conservation. Reactivation. Reperformance. Different modes of existence of an ephemeral work that, at first glance, seems impossible either to repeat or to preserve adequately.

Photographs, drawings and videos preserve its image. Texts and diagrams preserve a sequence of actions and instructions. A score promises the possibility of repetition. A newspaper clipping creates a contextual frame. But does the performance itself survive when it is repeated in another historical moment? Or only the memory of the possibility of performing it again?

The most intriguing idea was the impossibility of literal reproduction and the conscious rejection of such an ambition. A performance belongs not only to the performer’s body, but also to the weather, politics, architecture, the moment in which it occurred, particular situations and technical limitations. A performer should therefore not become a copying machine. On the contrary, the present becomes the only material that allows the work to continue. To me, reperformance resembles a free translation rather than a meticulous restoration. It is precisely the present that becomes the additional material enabling the work to keep burning in the form of an alternative translation.

Time rarely destroys. More often, it slowly transfers things from one mode of presence to another. One day you realise that what you remember is no longer the gesture itself or its background, but the movement it once set in motion, or sometimes only its context, always imperfectly.

After the lecture, Stefan invited Alexey and me to a bar once again to meet the guests.

Another performance took place in the studio. Kamil asked us to prepare the space for Danila's birthday surprise Fig 1–6/11–15. We decorated the table Fig 2–3, a crowd gathered Fig 15, everyone made enough noise to prompt a complaint from the neighbor in the early morning hours. Danila was delighted, shimmering with feathers Fig 1 and legs Fig 13–14.

At night we finally carried out the Christmas tree. For almost three months it had stood in the corridor Fig 16. No longer a holiday, not yet rubbish. We kept postponing its transplantation into the landlord's garden until it finally dried out. Much like a performance, it existed in a strange interval between the event and the archive.

The conservation failed. Or did it?
