the Synagogue
I sketched designs for windowsill structures Fig 4: I want to green all five windows in the apartment. During the day Liza came by, and we re-mounted my works from the series Atlas of Tectonic Landscapes: Black Smoke Fig 1 under glass for her exhibition. The next day she was already installing them, while in the evening I went to the studio for an improvised wine assembly: Olga Mzhelska Fig 5 with her husband Fedor, Alexei, Roman with Olga, Liavon with Natasha. We noisily discussed everything. Fedor spoke about his investigation of the “Onion Field” in Belarus, where political prisoners are forced to work the land owned by a German far-right politician. Natasha described how she fights pigeons with a water gun. And we also spoke about the synagogue.
The Nowa Synagoga, built in 1907 on Stawinski Street, is granite, arched, in the Neo-Romanesque style. Under the Germans it was turned into a swimming pool.The equipment was supplied by the same company that built gas chambers, a sinister allusion turned into a shameful fact. After the war the building was not returned to the Jewish community. Under communism it remained a gym. After 1989, in the course of restitution, the building formally passed to the Żydowska Gmina Wyznaniowa (the Jewish religious gmina), which repeatedly attempted to sell it despite protests from activists and historians, as well as initiatives to turn the synagogue into a cultural center (John Zorn even performed there). And so they, the heirs of pain, wanted to sell it. Citizens fought, but without success. Then came long-awaited news: after many disputes the building was finally entered into the register of Poznań’s architectural monuments. The gmina is extremely displeased with this, but I hope the decision has saved this architectural jewel for us.
June 12
The next day Sasha Kanonchenko arrived from Berlin for the exhibition opening. After English class she and Alexei came to my place and fell asleep on the couch for half an hour like children Fig 7. Then we walked around Poznań and Sasha pasted her repoussé works, brass street art and a kind of urban code, directly onto the walls of Mostowa Fig 9. In the evening was the opening of Liza Stecko’s diploma show at the Academy Fig 2. At the center of her master’s research is Belarus, borders, political turbulence. Afterwards we all trooped to Dragon Fig 3.
June 14
On Saturday Alexei and I returned to the exhibition, where Liza gave a tour Fig 6 for us and for Valentiy, who had come especially. Again Dragon, again the rapid bubbles of prosecco, and I slipped away with Olga Maslovska to Roman and Krzysztof’s Fig 8/11–13, where Zhora and Denis were already visiting. Kitsch videos Fig 12, a demonstration of their collection of folk costumes Fig 16, the beauty of absurdity. The evening ended with a pre-housewarming at Kirill and his girlfriend Veronika’s. Then the whole band poured into bars, and for the third time (as if bewitched) we found ourselves in the belly of Dragon until closing. Almost at four in the morning Pavel also returned home Fig 17, like a ghost: drunk and imperturbable.

All Sunday we nursed ourselves back from the hangover of Dragon’s days.

Драгон и синагога
11 июня
Разработал эскизы конструкций для подоконников: хочу озеленить все пять окон в квартире. Днём зашла Лиза, переоформили под стекло мои работы из серии «Атлас тектонических ландшафтов: Чёрный дым» для её выставки. На следующий день она уже вела монтаж, а я к вечеру отправился в студию на импровизированную винную ассамблею: Ольга Мжельская с мужем Фёдором, Алексей, Роман с Ольгой, Лявон с Наташей. Шумно обсуждали разное. Фёдор рассказал о своём расследовании «Лукового поля» в Беларуси, где на земле, принадлежащей немецкому ультраправому политику, принудительно работают политзаключённые. Наташа – как воюет с голубями с помощью водяного пистолета. А ещё говорили про синагогу.
Nowa Synagoga, построенная в 1907 году на улице Ставиньского – гранитная, арочная, в неороманском стиле. При немцах здание превратили в бассейн. Оборудование поставляла та же компания, что строила газовые камеры (зловещая аллюзия, превращённая в позорный факт). После войны здание не вернулось еврейской общине. При коммунизме там сохранился спортзал. После 1989 года, в ходе репатриации, здание формально перешло в собственность Żydowska Gmina Wyznaniowa (еврейской религиозной гмины), которая неоднократно предпринимала попытки его продать, несмотря на протесты активистов и историков, а также инициативы по превращению синагоги в культурный центр (там даже выступал Джон Зорн). И вот они, наследники боли, хотели продать её. Горожане боролись, но безуспешно. И вдруг долгожданная новость: после долгих споров здание наконец внесли в реестр памятников архитектуры Познани. Гмина этим крайне недовольна, но, надеюсь, это решение спасло для нас эту архитектурную жемчужину.
12 июня
На следующий день из Берлина приехала Саша Канонченко, к открытию выставки. После занятий английским она с Алексеем зашли ко мне и уснули на диване минут на тридцать, как дети. Потом гуляли по Познани, а Саша клеила чеканки – свой латунный стрит-арт и городской код прямо на стены Мостовой. Вечером открытие дипломной выставки Лизы Стецко в Академии. В центре её магистерского исследования – Беларусь, границы, политическая турбулентность. После мы всей толпой побрели в Драгон.
14 июня
В субботу с Алексеем вернулись на выставку, где Лиза проводила экскурсию нам и специально приехавшему Валентию. Снова Dragon, снова стремительные пузыри просекко, и я с Ольгой Масловской ускользаю к Роману и Кшиштофу, где в гостях уже были Жора и Денис. Китч-клипы, демонстрация коллекции народных нарядов, красота нелепости. Финал вечера – предновоселье у Кирилла и его подруги Вероники. А потом весь табор по барам, и уже в третий раз (как заколдованные) мы в чреве “Драгона” до закрытия. Почти в четыре утра и Павел также возвращается домой, будто призрак: пьяный и невозмутимый.

Всё воскресенье лечились от угара драконовских дней.
