a Choice
Family as a Choice 1 it’s a way of being, a manifesto of our community. We started from the studio itself, from the bonds that have formed around it over the years. We selected the participants not only based on their artistic practice, but above all on closeness, attentiveness, and shared history. The show presents not only artworks but also artifacts, personal relics, and family testimonies, both material and imagined. This is an exhibition about care, about the possibility of being a family beyond biology or formality. Below is the curatorial text by Alexey Lunev and myself:
In an era marked by the collapse of familiar foundations and the forced rupture with "home" – geographical, political, ancestral – the need to create new forms of intimacy becomes more urgent than ever. The exhibition Family as a Choice Fig Fig 1–11, opening at Gray Mandorla Studio in Poznań, gathers artifacts, artworks, memories, and relics tied to what may become a space of trust, a mirror, a protective gesture – a family we choose.
The exhibition brings together twenty-seven individuals: artists, friends of the studio, and those whose life paths have intersected with Gray Mandorla since its founding in 2021. We deliberately do not privilege artwork over artifact and dissolve the boundaries between the artistic and the domestic, the biographical and the fictional, the public and the intimate.
The concept of the “chosen family,” drawn from queer optics, is not merely a metaphor here but a structuring principle of the exhibition. We are inspired by the ballroom culture of 1980s–90s New York, where queer communities created "houses" as systems of protection, mutual support, and aesthetic practice. These structures included kinship terms, rituals of recognition, and care practices in which “home” was both a political refuge and an aesthetic stance. Within this logic, “family” becomes a space of struggle and repair, not defined by blood or legal ties.
We also draw on the experience that emerged spontaneously in the community surrounding the Minsk gallery Ў in the 2010s. There, friendships and professional relationships evolved into informal yet resilient kinship structures is a phenomenon of chosen family united not only by collective activity, but by mutual care, support, and shared belonging. This structure offered a fertile alternative to isolation in authoritarian conditions. That same model has since re-emerged in the diasporic community around Gray Mandorla Studio, where a shared space has become a site of attraction, everyday care, and collective habitation of loss, exile, and resistance.
The objects on view echo familial closeness and resonate with one another intuitively. Recurring gestures include: readymades, autobiography, embroidery, manual labor, photography, documents, doubling and mirrored compositions. These motifs reflect not only the act of seeing oneself through reflection, but the very structure of queer family, built on repetition, echo, and rhyme, where the other becomes a lens through which we come to know ourselves. Repetition here is not merely a formal device, but a conceptual category: an act of identification, recognition, reconstruction, kinship.
Key concepts guiding our thinking in this exhibition include: care, affiliation, exilic trauma, affect, intimate history, autobiography, and co-authorship as a form of life.
Family as a Choice is, above all, a gesture of recognition – of those who stand beside us, of those who have become our reflection. It is a shared space of trust and memory.
I also presented three of my own modest works in the show: each of them touching on the theme of family in its fragile and ever-changing form. One of the works is dedicated to Zhanna Gladko; the other two reflect both a former family and the new conditions of the present. It’s not so much a memory as it is a critical transition: from the inherited to the chosen, from the past to what we now build ourselves. Here are the texts about those works:
A mirror bearing the slogan Mirror Powder Compact System becomes an image of a multilayered and fragile multiverse, a system of reflections and rhizomes, where the tiny mirrors of powder compacts evoke portals and worlds within worlds, existential dust-powder as a symbol of fragility and illusion, memory and fake. This work is at once about family as an endless system of reflections and variations of choice, and about the layers of deception we sometimes use to cover pain or vulnerability.
A photograph and a concrete book form an improvised diptych in which the memory of community formation and the reflection on a new ethics come together as an image of familial solidarity and political sensitivity. In the photograph Conservation (Father Must Not Know the Dirt of His Daughter), the artist holds the slogan together with Alexey Lunev (his chosen father) and Zhanna Gladko (his chosen sister): a shared gesture in which the appropriation of someone else's statement becomes an act of complicity. The work refers to the early emergence of the chosen family phenomenon in Minsk in the 2010s, as a space of trust, care, and the redefinition of roles.
Next to it lies a concrete book bearing the phrase New Etiquette Order, as if scorched into its surface by the smoke of war, media noise, or internal burning. This ambivalent object can be read as a foundation, an ethical platform, but also as a knowledge-brick used to frighten from the other side of the barricade: “new ethics” as weapon. And yet, for the artist, it is indeed a weapon, not of aggression, but of familial ethics. Alongside the photograph, where appropriation becomes solidarity, the work asserts that family and the choice to build it, is also a form of resistance, a system of ethical armament.

Conservation (Father Must Not Know the Dirt of His Daughter), 2010 / New Etiquette Order, 2025
