Bushes Against
Technology

July 20

At last we went to Taisa’s to see their new apartment in Naromowice. The district lies far from the center, where the streets have not yet had time to grow over and scar. The first impression was alienating, identical block-houses pressed tightly against one another, and the area encircled by ugly gas pipes like carnivorous pythons. But on closer look greenery had already been planted, and one could see how the development was pulling itself into ecology, the voids filling with a kind of future. Their apartment itself was truly special, a corner flat with an L-shaped garden running along the perimeter, almost like a private house that gave a sense of seclusion, a rarity in such projects. The three of us lay on the clean floor Fig 6 where Taisa had just finished washing the windows Fig 7, drinking wine on the threshold of our new shared experiences.

That same evening I went to the Warta. There were Aleksandra, Aleksei and Mikita Fig 13, Zhora and Denis Fig 19. The conversation quickly turned to artificial intelligence. Before everyone’s eyes I fed Mikita’s play into AI, and immediately a two-voice podcast sounded, simultaneously intelligent and accessible. Everyone was shocked. Mikita himself said it felt like revelation, as if a blind man had seen. At the same time, in contrast with the river, luminous scooters and unicycles flashed past us, and above our heads a police drone hovered. We had sought refuge in nature, but found ourselves in the very center of an arriving future.

July 21–22

In the following days I completed the capsules for the reliquaries Fig 15, and on the evening of July 22 Zhora and I went to the Zamek, saw the exhibitions Fig 2, and held the first session of our film lovers’ club at the bar MY pod sceną. The film was The Wild Boys Fig 14. Repellent and magnetic. The discussion was lively, even though there are few true film lovers among us. Yet that is precisely the strength, to speak aloud while sitting next to one another in a real place about a film just seen, against the habit of dissolving everything into streams and chats.

After the gym I covered my desk with berries and fruit Fig 9.

Again Zhora and I walked through the Citadel Fig 1/3. Toads under the willows Fig 4–5, rackets we found, devilish porcini on a glade, wine in the abandoned amphitheater, bats and swallows entangled in the sky and discernible only by the altitude of their flight.

When dusk fell we reached the cruising zone Fig 16–17. We sat on the steps and counted the men who came, only eight. This upset Zhora. He saw the body draining away from the city. To cheer him up we went to the old slaughterhouse Fig 12/18 where half-open gates led into a nocturnal building, and afterwards I took him to the Dark Angels Cruising Club Fig 10. There again were only eight people. This became the final point. Zhora rated Poznań zero in sexual terms.

Poznań is growing dynamically. New districts, infrastructure, blocks at the edges, green courtyards, coffee shops. Yet with this comes a paradox. Communities are disappearing. Those that once lived in the thickets of parks, in amphitheaters, in sex clubs, on stairways and in doorways are being expelled along with dirt and spontaneity. Cruising disappears not because there is no desire but because the city no longer allows it. Drinking in the street is forbidden, the drone will fine you, alcohol is sold only until ten, the city regulates freedom, and one can burn at night only in expensive bars. Even in queer Poznań one feels how the physical is being displaced by virtual dating sites and hipster gentrification, how corporeality is being replaced by interface. Sex by schedule, encounters through algorithm.

This is why we go to parks and bushes, launch film clubs, play badminton, sit on stairways, watch, wait. This is why we manifest that even on the ruins of the old one can build new forms of presence.
