The city was gripped by severe frost Fig 21. It became increasingly difficult to venture outside unnecessarily. The season of temporary shelters had begun: cafés, studios and other people’s kitchens. On this day, Andrei and Lia brought the French artist Alexis Léore Pouget to our studio Fig 20. He visited our exhibition about family, asked about the work of GM, the community that had gradually formed around it, and our various projects Fig 11–12/24–25/31.
January 28–31
The opening of his solo exhibition at Barbara Baryżewska Studio Fig 18–19/26–29. The exhibition was built from found objects, small assemblages and almost accidental artefacts scattered throughout the space. Among them were VHS tapes from an imaginary film titled Nocturne, moth wings, chains, old slides and various items sourced from flea markets. Together, they formed a fragile and poetic statement about memory and fiction.
The last days of January passed under a blanket, working.
February 1–4
Pavel and I escaped the city and drove to a frozen lake Fig 13–17. At one point, we spotted a winter swimmer bathing in an ice hole. If this season does not always calm the nerves, it nevertheless subjects them to instinct: beauty at low temperatures is true beauty ¹. After spending the bleak sunset hours by the shore, we rescued our frozen fingers in a small pizzeria overlooking the lake.
One evening shortly afterwards, a group of us gathered at Natasha’s Fig 3–10. Conversations gradually turned into a game involving two black chains, from which we took turns creating an entire menagerie of animals Fig 5–8.
February 5
I welcomed collectors to the studio. We discussed artwork sales, future projects and my participation in upcoming spring festivals.
