I booked accommodation for my trip to the Venice Biennale in May. January is still one of the few moments when it is possible to find rare options in the very centre of Venice at reasonable prices.
In the evening, I attended the opening of Hubert Czerepok’s exhibition at Galeria Arsenał Fig 8–11. The artist brought together his key neon works, turning the exhibition into a kind of retrospective of light and text. A somewhat lazy one, though.
After the opening, a large group of us moved to our studio Fig 20. Conversations stretched far beyond midnight. At some point, for reasons unknown, we ended up drinking vodka mixed with beetroot juice. After everyone had left, I remained alone in the studio. I poured the juice across the table, put on white gloves and filmed myself smearing the thick red liquid across the surface Fig 1–4. The following day, the studio filled with people once again. The last guests left at around two in the morning Fig 5–7.

At Zhora and Dura’s studio, work began on a festival dedicated to sex workers Fig 18. Their first discussions revolved around the history of Poznań and an attempt to view the city through the perspective of those whose presence is usually erased from official narratives.

The first tattoo lesson for Alexey took place. Earlier, our community had pooled money to buy him a starter set of equipment. The excellent session was led by Nadya as a gift Fig 13–16/19. Most of the first meeting was devoted to safety procedures, sterility and the organisation of the working process. Only towards the very end did Alexey take a tattoo machine into his hands for the first time and, visibly nervous, begin working on artificial skin.
Looking back on these days, I realise that they were unexpectedly united by the theme of the trace. The maps and notes from the strategic session, Czerepok’s neon inscriptions, beetroot juice spread across a tabletop, the first lines drawn on artificial skin, attempts to recover the disappearing histories of the city’s sex workers. All of these were different ways of leaving an imprint on a material that is not always ready to receive it.
