Green Horizon

January 19

Marina Dashuk and Lena Shtyk came to stay with us for a few days. The main reason for their visit was to take the first steps towards establishing the Gray Mandorla Foundation. The idea of the foundation did not emerge overnight. Over the past few years, numerous projects had accumulated around the studio, gradually outgrowing the framework of a single space or institution. Alongside Gray Mandorla Studio itself, the Belarusian Art Research Platform KALEKTAR continued to develop, while musical projects, exhibitions, films, concerts, educational programmes, residencies and performances kept multiplying. More and more often, we found ourselves discussing the possibility of expanding our activities to other cities, particularly Warsaw and Berlin.

At the same time, each of us brought our own fields of interest. Marina produces performances, festivals and cultural programmes. Lena has become increasingly engaged with ecology, retreats, gardening and sustainable practices. I, in turn, found myself thinking more and more about wills, personal archives, collections and artistic legacies, all of which would eventually require not only a place of preservation but also a responsible institution capable of managing and developing them. Gradually, it became clear that all these initiatives needed a common structure, one capable of bringing together diverse activities under a single umbrella and allowing them to grow. The conversation about creating a foundation finally shifted from an abstract idea to a concrete task.

In the morning, we went to see a space recently purchased by Raman Tratsiuk in his building. The semi-basement premises still lacked electricity and any visible signs of a future gallery, yet this was precisely where Gaze Gallery Fig 8 was meant to emerge. Raman spoke about the first exhibition he hoped to realise there, one connected to the former function of the space as a hallucinogen shop.

In the evening, we found ourselves at SARP club after Sergey Pukst’s concert at My pod sceną. We missed the performance itself but arrived in time for the afterparty and a large gathering of friends. I was especially happy to see Sergey Pukst, whom I had not embraced in a very long time. Conversations and jokes gradually gave way to photographs Fig 4–7 and dancing.

January 21–22

The next two days were devoted to a strategic session led by Yulia Asperskaya. Together with Marina and Lena, we tried not only to formulate the practical goals of the future foundation but also to understand the values that lay at its core Fig 1–3/9. We began with associative cards and images Fig 1. The process felt like moving through darkness: first identifying individual objects by touch, then slowly beginning to understand the contours of the room itself.

What surprised us most was how similar our visions of the future turned out to be. It quickly became clear that none of us imagined the foundation as merely another urban office or cultural institution. Instead, we saw something both more ambitious and more straightforward: a community embedded within a natural landscape, bringing together collections, archives, residencies, workshops, educational programmes and spaces for collective living. Not so much an organisation as an ecosystem.

It was at that moment that our green horizon first appeared.
