David Lynch

David Lynch taught that even in an ordinary socket there are other dimensions, and in a kettle the spirit of Bowie may dwell. That beneath the façade of a cozy small town there is not a set of “little secrets” but a bottomless abyss, that behind the trim of a sterile kitchen parasites writhe, and in the grass of a perfect lawn beetles crawl. For “stories should contain suffering” 1. That a human being is not “consciousness in a body” but a projection screen where horrors and orgasms alternate, sobs and laughter, words spoken backwards and accelerated video loops.

Lynch tore the flesh of the familiar. He peeled away the skin of perception. Everything we knew about cinema ceased to function. Logic, structure, causality: he erased them and made catharsis out of senselessness. He destroyed the idea of cinema as entertainment and took from it sound, rhythm, texture, and returned to us an experience. As if we had forgotten who we were, and were being born again in the electric hum.

In interviews he always spoke simply and kindly. He could spend a week talking about the taste of avocado toast while simultaneously making Twin Peaks: The Return – the greatest work of the twenty-first century. A nuclear explosion in the aesthetics of modernity. Lynch threw hermetic plotlines out the window, burned dialogue, left us with wailing, sonic dust, the image of Laura screaming through our own throats. It was an assault. The third season was the best thing that could have happened to cinema in recent decades.

Lynch was the director who understood the body best of all. Fear in his films was bodily. Desire was painful. His images were unforgettable because they entered like a virus.

Like Lynch, I am an idealist and also believe that “I’m not different from anyone else. But I see the world as getting better and better, not worse and worse” 2.

And after all, he also wrote music, created visual art and texts, animation and furniture. His music is tectonic. Prolonged. A straight line into the inner nightmare and the dreams we have forgotten. Or into bliss. Depending on the frequency at which you tremble.

I admit it: he did what most never even attempt. He was a seismograph, registering the tremor of the real and the unreal. A discoverer of new worlds. He made the future bright 3.

Thank you, David, for showing us how to see through the darkness of the real.
