Snow and Ash

January 1

In Poland, New Year’s is not a holiday. What matters here is Christmas Eve and domestic quiet, fir branches and an empty city on the first of January. But for me, raised in post-Soviet reality, New Year and the beginning of January were always a point of reset and a gesture of cleansing. “The calendar is a structure built not to remember, but to forget” 1.

The Zabel family stayed with us after New Year’s, and January 1 became the traditional continuation of the celebration: lounging, leftovers from the fridge, and endless films on the projector. The cat played with Christmas ornaments, knocking them to the floor with his paw.

By January 2 we ventured into the city Fig 2/8. Skimming the cream off the end of the holidays: deserted streets, grey sky, and sudden clarity.

January 3

On the third day there was a fire in the house across the street on Mostowa. And at the same time it began to snow. Black and white flakes mixing in the wind. As if winter itself could not decide: to be an act of cleansing or an act of reminding. The rest of January held to this balance. Between the warm apartment, films, guests, walks, and the anxiety of coming news that has not lifted since 2020. Yet we carefully sustained the fragile calm that appeared in those days Fig 5.

January 6

Alexei and I walked through the city, stopped by a new French restaurant in Wilson Park Fig 3. That evening, Zhenya Gurnovska came to the studio for a cocktail night.

January 10

A meeting at Dragon Fig 4 and, rare for Poznań Fig 1, a generous snowfall.

January 12

The snow had melted, and with its disappearance I carried the tree out to the street, where, as always, it will stand until spring.

From the very first days I rejoined projects and scripts: already by January 3 I was back in the process Fig 6–7, while at the same time preparing for my Polish exam, corresponding with Sergey Kurnosov, and starting the renovation in our stairwell. By mid-spring, our building will be fully renewed.

“The calendar is a structure built not to remember, but to forget” 1.
