The illness that had seemed to be almost gone after the nightly wanderings suddenly returned. By evening my throat was badly sore, and the next day I was down with a fever. It became clear that I would not recover in time for the New Year.

So Pavel and I decided to welcome the New Year at home, just the two of us. During the day, for barely fifteen minutes, Zhora and Tasha Katsuba Fig 20 stopped by and brought a salad (as if anticipating that, while sick, I would hardly be able to cook). And yet by lunchtime I felt better and found myself in the kitchen, preparing food for the lazy days ahead.
It seems that for the first time in my life I welcomed the New Year alone with Pavel Fig 23: with year-in-review videos on the screen and fireworks outside the window frightening our cat. The following days passed in bed, and I finally got back on my feet.

It became unbearable to stay inside for so long. The snowfall and Taisa, who stopped by to pick up some records, pulled me out for a walk to the river Fig 8–14/18–19. This year the city has been holding on to the snow unusually long, a drawn-out post-holiday gift.
In the evening, Andrei and Liya Doslevy came to the studio, along with Lyosha, Vlada Ralko and Volodymyr Budnikov, as well as Anastasia Budnikova with her children. They had arrived in Poznań for the presentation of Vlada’s book at the Doslevy Gallery. And on January 3 it was Vlada’s birthday, which is why we gathered at Gray Mandorla Studio to congratulate her Fig 12/21/24–25. I gave her one of my works, the one that, as it seems to me, suits her most precisely: an image of a black raven attacking a Vatican dove, one of the frightening harbingers of the horrors of a protracted war.
By the evening of the next day I went to the presentation of Vlada’s book Fig 6/16–17. She spoke at length about her visual text, about the Lviv diaries, about the war, and about the semiotics and imagery that in her book often cause unease among international curators. The conversation gradually widened. We talked about how war is represented in art and in the news, about modes of bearing witness.
After the presentation we stayed together for a while longer, and then Lyosha and I decided to leave the Ukrainian group alone so they could talk without Belarusians. We went out into the city, bought some wine, and eventually reached one of the smallest and most beautiful little squares in the center of Poznań, with spreading acacias. A small triangular patch, almost unnoticed. On one of the facades we became absorbed by zeros, which then began to appear everywhere Fig 1/3–7: on air conditioners, in lumps of snow, in random elements of the city’s body. Zeros and wine led us into more ruinous confessions.

For Orthodox Christmas we finally went to Taisa and Yegor’s new apartment. We had planned to celebrate the New Year with them, but it did not work out then, and now we were closing that gestalt by simply having dinner together. While I was making a casserole for dinner, the news came that Béla Tarr had died. A significant part of our genuinely warm, almost family evening was spent talking about his films: we remembered, discussed, and watched several documentary fragments about this important director and his aesthetics of despair Fig 2.
