Riga Secession

August 29

Festival opening day Fig 5/19. I spent half the day lying in the hotel, then Lido and the vernissage. At the opening, Nadya Markevich appeared like Leda: the missing part of her arm was replaced by a large white wing Fig 20. Filipka Rudkovska came out in a bright blue suit and, with a defiant performance, once again shook the gender framework, turning the body into an instrument of resistance Fig 3. Kexin Hao presented a strange theater, like a batlejka, but with slit-portals resembling vaginas: the puppet action became a bodily topography. In the finale, a DJ set began, among the DJs the sound artist Demetrio Costelluci Fig 6.

We celebrated until night, and I retreated to the hotel, skipping the afterparty. Riga pushed me away again: the uneven streets around the exhibition were dug up, like the dissected corpse of a city, with wires, pipes, and remnants of Soviet fittings sticking out. The festival created the illusion of a progressive bubble, but a step to the side and you met the harsh depression of the outskirts Fig 1. A night passage through these quarters struck me in the back with the same chill as during my first encounter with Riga.

August 30

In the morning Karol and I checked out and walked with our suitcases through the Grīziņdarzs district, photographing the ornate Secession buildings Fig 7–11

Then a taxi, the airport, and an hour’s flight to Warsaw. A sparkling conversation with Nadya Markevich Fig 4.

By the afternoon I was already at Marina’s in Warsaw, where we met with Kiryl Masheka. He did not give in to my persuasion to visit Instytut-bar Fig 14/16, and I went there alone, but the bar this time made a depressing impression and I left early.

August 31

In the morning Pavel arrived in the city, helping transport fragile porcelain and an art collection from Poznań for the professor. After unloading, he stopped by me, and the three of us with Marina discussed the future of the Kalektar foundation. Then I took Pavel to a MSN Fig 12–13/15 that impressed him: he is a great admirer of new architecture. Warsaw suddenly broke away from the provinciality of other Polish cities. One such museum is enough to recompose the map of cultural gravity.

After a Japanese restaurant, we set off for Poznań at sunset. I was nodding off, so Pavel unfolded the seat, wrapped me in a blanket, tucked in a pillow, put on my music, and held my hand. Outside the window trees flickered, cut through by reddish rays Fig 18. The rhythm of light and sound coincided with the pulse. A deafening sense of the moment.

We entered Poznań at night, and Pavel dropped me off at the My pod sceną bar, so I could still pass on to friends the residual current of my travels.
