Bird Conclave

August 26

I spent the whole day at Marina’s, catching up on sleep after Łódź and gathering my thoughts before Riga.

August 27

I went to the Ujazdowski Castle. With the arrival of Anna Lazar, the new director of the institution, my inner veto on visiting the Castle ended. At last I could look at the exhibition without irritation. I was glad to see that the bookshop had closed for renovation, which was absolutely necessary. In the exhibition halls the themes were ecology, AI, and photography, and Karol Radziszewski’s selection worked most strongly Fig 8. I met Valeria, a Ukrainian curator now married to a Polish diplomat in Brazil. We spoke about South America and about our region with its diseased lungs.

Next I visited the MSN Fig 5–7/17–18. This time the space finally opened itself up. The walls had been cleaned of stains, the scale of the works had shifted from monumental to more intimate forms, and a diversity of media had been added. The potential of the building became more visible. I met with Gleb Burnashev and spoke with him about the museum routine, about installation, about hidden wiring and the invisible veins that support the exhibition. We took a short walk with Yana’s dog, temporarily entrusted to Gleb, and I went home to prepare for the early flight.

August 28

Flight to Riga with Karol Radziszewski. He spoke about his application for the Polish Pavilion in Venice and the hopes that had become almost obsessive for him, but already clearly hopeless. At the airport we met the Mongolian artist Bekhbaatar Enkhtur, who lives in Turin. The three of us were taken to the hotel and from there through a depressive neighborhood by the railway to a new hub, a hipster center still partly under renovation. The exhibitions were placed directly in unfinished buildings, a curatorial gesture that worked flawlessly. The construction site became a stage, the renovation became exhibition fabric, and emptiness was presented as potential. Such an approach should become standard practice since it expands cultural spaces, even if temporary, in any city.

The curatorial team of Survival Kit 16: House of See-More was Michal Grzegorzek Fig 21 and Slavs and Tatars (Kasia Korczak and Payam Sharifi). I received truly warm feedback from them on my work, and they mentioned preliminary plans for the exhibition to travel.

At the festival I presented the archive Reliquaries XX–XXI. Version 6: Bird Conclave (2009–2025) Fig 1–4. This version gathers fragments of works by deceased artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, in which the image of the bird appears as mediator: messenger of death, sign of transition, avatar of authorship. Wings and feathers, angels and flocks, Leda and Simurgh, the Phoenix and the Firebird, Prometheus and the Dove of Peace, harpies and birds of death become forms of foreboding, self-reflection, and disappearance. The archive assembles into a sacred conclave, a gathering of last gestures and unspoken omens. Here the bird is an image of the artist, a mark of loss, and a sign of unceasing presence.

Like Marcel Broodthaers’s Musée d’Art Moderne – Département des Aigles (1968), where the eagle was a symbol of institutional critique, of the instability of value and the constructedness of authenticity, this reliquary functions as a structure of memory and as a critical gesture that lays bare the logic of collecting and the fetishization of truth. It questions the very possibility of representation and the mechanisms of historical selection.

The work was created specifically for the festival. The curators proposed the central figure of the Simurgh, the mythical Sufi bird of multiplicity and revelation. In Attar’s poem the birds set out in search of the divine and discover their own reflection. Bird Conclave develops this metaphor, reflecting on death, dispersion, and the collective gaze.

After checking the hanging and a short tour of the exhibition, we went for lunch at Lido (the Minsk branch came to mind automatically) and then for an aperitif at the bar of the festival participant, the artist Daria Melnikova Fig 20

Later we met Yarema Malashchuk, who works in a duo with Roman Khimei. Their video installation with sleeping children, which I had already seen in Venice, turned out to be one of the significant statements of the festival. Karol, who enjoys photographing naked heterosexual boys, persuaded Yarema to pose Fig 11–14. I myself wandered inside to meet the studio that had created Flow, the Latvian animated film that won an Oscar. I bought a pin with a black cat and invited the charming vendor to come to the opening the next day.

Riga by day was raw post-Soviet texture, concrete and pallor. In the evening the same quarters blossomed with light, filled with people, and turned into a welcoming stage. English was heard everywhere, as if it were a password. By clothing and manner it was easy to identify the Russians, but English erased their recognizability and created a fictive community of relocants.

We returned home late with Karol and Yarema, and once again realized that we had staged a false start even before the opening.

Bird Conclave

Survival Kit 16: House of See-More – Михал Гжэгожэк и Slavs and Tatars (Кася Корчак и Паям Шарифи) – я получил от них действительно тёплую обратную связь к своей работе, и они озвучили предварительные планы на гастроли экспозиции.
