Excursions
I spent the day working on documents and writing a script.
August 18
The opening of the first exhibition at the studio of Andriy and Liya Dostliev. Andriy brought with him a metal plate from Warsaw that read Barbara Baryżewska, once the sign of his apartment gallery named after the actress Barbara who had lived in those rooms in earlier times, judging by the plate on the door. From now on all projects of their new studio in Poznań will take place under this name. The first exhibition Fig 4–5 was works by Liya Dostlieva and Dmytro Krasny Fig 6. After the opening, where many Ukrainian colleagues gathered, we decided to begin a tradition of cross-routes and corridors of trust, guiding curators and visitors from one studio to another. We took wine, and I managed to lead the group into Gray Mandorla Studio Fig 7, where I gave an improvised tour.
August 19
My brother arrived. At sunset we went to see my installation at the Arsenal Gallery and then headed to the film club meeting. That day Lisa presented the film, and she chose Strawberry Mansion Fig 21.
August 20
In the morning we went to the small town of Buk to submit documents for the registration of a birth certificate in Poland. However, we were refused since Soviet-era document formats are not accepted in some voivodeships. Lawyers advised waiting because there are rumors that the decision will be reversed and the green booklets will again be recognized as valid. For now we postponed the process, but the trip gave us a chaotic ride through the suburbs of Poznań. In the evening my brother left, though not before seeing the exhibition in our studio.
August 21
Sarmen Beglarian Fig 8–9 and Tomek Fudala Fig 10, queer curators from Warsaw, came to Poznań. We met them at the Arsenal Gallery at our group exhibition and then together with Zhora we took them to Gray Mandorla Studio. They noted that our exhibition looked more structured and more emotional than the one at Arsenal, with a stronger selection and quality of works.
Independent art spaces possess a key quality, flexibility. Institutions confuse stability with immobility. Unlike institutions bound by bureaucracy and hierarchy, studios work horizontally. Decisions are made quickly, and the work is built on trust and involvement. This makes it possible to work with living time rather than chasing the past. Moreover, it is precisely here that the infrastructure of solidarity is born. Artists share resources, create communities, and build dialogue. Small spaces are more like reactors than museums. They do not preserve and multiply dust but burn it, producing warmth and light.
After the tour we stopped by Andriy Dostliev’s studio and then stepped out into the city glowing with sunlight Fig 11–12, filled with thousands of guests of the Urban Sketchers festival Fig 20 held in Poland for the first time. This international plein air event dedicated to drawing the city from life brought artists from all over the world. The city became a sketchbook, with every crack in the façades finding its way into someone’s album.
Later Zhora and I went on another tour to the Jeżyce district Fig 19 to visit Sava. Sava and Denis prepared dinner, and later Pavel joined. Sava is preparing to move to Italy, and he is passing the apartment to friends who will live there starting in October. The house stands on one of the city’s most beloved streets, Szamarzewskiego, shaded by acacias, with small restaurants and a well-known flower shop Fig 15
The apartment turned out to be truly bohemian Fig 13–14/16–18. On the first floor the rooms were jungles of plants, tomatoes ripened on the windowsills, and in the next room stood a large bathtub with a scorched mandorla from burning sandalwood. Such apartments become burrows in the body of the city. We bite into its fabric, inhabit it, and make it ours. I am glad that now we have yet another place on this very street, a space where we will spend much time.
