The Archaeology
of Bridges

April 11

For several years the centre of Poznań was one vast excavation site. Fences stretching across the entire city, chunks of concrete, exposed cables and rebar in wild fluorescent colours, often serving no apparent purpose, numbers and symbols chalked onto the asphalt, intelligible only to the construction workers. The locals renamed the city Rozkopane (a pun on the mountain resort Zakopane), and Aleksei and I loved this version of the city more than the one that existed before, or the one that emerged after the renovations. A truly total installation (and pleasantly devoid of crowds!). Later, we would deliberately sit with a bottle of wine beside construction fences while pedestrian bridges were being built, watching the transformations and imagining the future skyline.

Today we went to another construction site to see how the old bridge over the Warta was being rebuilt Fig 1–4. One half had already been completely stripped away: rebar protruded from the concrete, stone blocks hung from metal mesh in ragged tufts like wool shedding from sheep during moulting season. Traffic still rumbled across the other half. Archaeology directed towards the future.

Easter at KUT Fig 5–8/20–21. Among the eggs, salads, Cahors wine and candles lay brightly coloured plastic crosses produced on a 3D printer Fig 6. Shortly before the holiday, Andrei Busel had modelled them after the Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk. Inside, the object was divided into small compartments, transforming it into a pillbox. The original cross, lost long ago, had once been inlaid with precious stones. Now their place was taken by colourful pills.

But in essence, every relic eventually becomes a container. Healing knowledge.

Preparations for Frottage. The two studios were gradually turning into a bridge. Gera sculpted two phallus-shaped bones, arranging them into a non-binary mandorla Fig 9–10.

I attended Marek Wasilewski's lecture on Leszek Knaflewski at the Academy of Fine Arts Fig 11–15.

Knaflewski began while still a student, producing almost crude, direct objects devoid of metaphorical restraint. In the early work Para, two roots resembling crosses lie side by side on a white sheet, lovers.

Later came the theatricality of Koło Klipsa, props, magical realism with its carnivalesque underside. Extraordinary drawings bordering on madness. Props. Punk.

What stayed with me most was his performance in which a coffin was transformed into a string instrument Fig 15. An industrial show as a premonition of death, tuned in advance like a tuning fork.

Towards the end of his life he turned towards German coldness, militarism, Neo-Pop, and the critique of consumerism. Gestures upon gestures. Gott mit uns (2004) Fig 14: a steel swastika fitted with condoms at both ends, its title borrowed from the buckles of German soldiers' belts. Safety and danger, godlessness and piety contained within a single object, without resolving in favour of either.

After the lecture, we followed our usual ritual and went to a bar with Marek, Stefan Ficner Fig 16–17 and friends. Heard wild stories about the fate of Leszek's artistic legacy.

KNAF'S NOT DEAD Fig 13.

Later we moved on to Dura's bar. At one point Dura made a gesture by setting one of their artificial fingernails on fire Fig 19.

KNAF’S NOT DEAD.
